Custom COVID-19 Test Cycler Software - Optimizing Testing Efficiency

Alexander Drossel

Introduction
During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, pharmacies and testing centers faced enormous pressure to provide accurate and timely testing. To support these efforts, we developed custom software for a COVID-19 test cycler, designed specifically for use in pharmacies and testing centers. Our aim was to create a streamlined, user-friendly solution that would enhance the efficiency of testing workflows, making it easier for healthcare professionals to handle high volumes of tests while maintaining accuracy.

The Challenge
One of the major challenges we faced was the integration of the COVID-19 test cycler's serial interface. The documentation provided for the device was unclear, which meant we had to reverse engineer the interface to achieve the desired functionality. Working as a small team of two developers, we adopted an agile methodology to tackle these challenges iteratively and efficiently, ensuring we could quickly adapt to any issues that arose.

Building the Solution
The software was built using Electron, a framework that allowed us to create a cross-platform desktop application with a focus on simplicity and usability. We designed an easy-to-navigate user interface to accommodate healthcare professionals, many of whom were not familiar with advanced software systems. The software featured advanced biotechnological calculations to accurately determine test results, and integrated with a proprietary database, enabling direct upload of test outcomes. This capability significantly improved the workflow for testing centers by reducing manual data entry and minimizing the risk of errors.

Outcome
The project was completed in a short timeframe, thanks to the agile approach we adopted and the small, focused nature of our team. The software delivered on its promise of streamlining the testing process, providing a reliable and user-friendly solution for COVID-19 testing centers and pharmacies. The ability to directly upload results to the proprietary database proved to be a major advantage, allowing healthcare professionals to focus more on patient care rather than administrative tasks.

Conclusion
The custom software for the COVID-19 test cycler demonstrated how a focused, agile approach could lead to rapid and impactful solutions, even in challenging circumstances. By simplifying the user experience and automating key parts of the workflow, the software improved efficiency and accuracy for testing centers at a critical time. The project serves as an example of how innovative software development can contribute meaningfully to public health efforts.
